Library at the Dubnoff Center for Child Development

The Dubnoff Center for Child Development is a school for children who are developmentally challenged. Many are considered “unteachable” by the LA Unified School District. For many of them, Dubnoff may be the last stop gap measure before being institutionalized.

Dubnoff’s library had been in disrepair for a few years, hanging on by a thread as one single volunteer, a dedicated 80-year old man named Allen Lavinger, manned the facility for all the children in the school, grades 1 - 12. The attitude of some seemed to be, “These kids are developmentally disabled, why do they need a library?” Believing that reading and the love of books are life enhancing gifts especially important to these special needs kids, a diverse group of adults brought their skill sets together to re-open the library. Within a year, the new Dubnoff Library was born.
